Which Watersports Should You Try in Dubai?
Dubai’s stunning coastline and pristine waters have helped turn it into a mecca for watersports enthusiasts in recent years. Its sandy beaches, which are just a stone’s throw away from the main financial district, are home to an array of different watersport Dubai activities such as surfing and paddleboarding. With so much choice on offer, it’s difficult to know which activity to try first. That’s why we’ve come up with a handy list of five sports that are guaranteed to get the blood pumping, below:
1. Flyboarding
Hoverboarding isn’t a new concept. It first came to the public’s attention in the 1989 classic Back to the Future II. Now some 30 years later, humans haven’t yet mastered how to make hoverboarding technology a reality. What they have done, however, is come up with arguably the next best thing.
Flyboarding involves standing on a small board in the ocean. Underneath the board, two water jet shoots help to propel you some nine feet in the air. This doesn’t just give you a fantastic vantage point over the city; it also allows you to carry out an array of loops and 360-degree flips.
Nearly every flyboarding provider in Dubai provides an on-boat videographer, who will be on hand to record your attempts at recreating your favorite superhero.
2. Jet Skiing
Hiring out a jet-ski for a few hours isn’t just a way to pass the time - it’s a hell of a lot of fun! After all, what other watersport activity lets you dart across the ocean at speeds close to 70kmph? Dubai is the perfect place to try out jet skiing too thanks to its spectacular backdrop of towering skyscrapers. Be warned: an instantiable urge to hum the James Bond theme might overcome you while you whizz around the harbor.
Some of the beaches close to the city that allow you to rent a jet ski include Dubai Marina, Jumeirah, and Umm Suqeim. You’re required by law to be at least 300 meters out from the shoreline when driving a jet ski at all three of these locations.
3. Kayaking
Speed isn’t the only way to get the blood pumping. A couple of hours kayaking can help you to get the heart rate up without the need to break sweat.
The activity is the perfect way to unwind from the hubbub of modern city life. You can paddle your way to Hatta Dam to enjoy the incredible mountain views or glide past the iconic Atlantis Hotel in the Dubai Marina.
Whatever route you choose to take, make sure you pack a waterproof camera – Dubai’s waters are filled with a vast array of friendly marine life, including bottlenose dolphins.
4. Paddleboarding
The calm and clear waters of the Persian Gulf make Dubai the perfect place to try out paddleboarding for the first time. Invented some 90 years ago, the activity has been gaining widespread popularity over the last decade as a laidback alternative to surfing.
Standing upright on the board gives you an excellent vantage point from which you can not only take in the cityscape but also the marine life below. On clear days, it’s common to see turtles and dugongs grazing on the seabed.
It might seem like a leisurely activity, but paddleboarding also provides a full body workout. Your legs, core, and upper body are all needed to paddle through the water standing upright, making this a fantastic activity for people of all ages.
5. Wakeboarding
Not for the faint-hearted, wakeboarding is a high-octane sport that combines the best of both surfing and snowboarding.
You’ll be required to strap your feet into boots on a small board before gripping onto a rope that is attached to the end of a speedboat. As soon as the boat starts picking up speed, it will create a wake, otherwise known as waves. Your job is to ride over those waves without spectacularly falling over. Believe us, it’s easier said than done.
Most first-timers struggle to last more than 30 seconds without some sort of mishap. Those that take the time to master the sport, however, are rewarded with the ability to use the waves as springboards for exhilarating air spins and jumps.
