Ministry Of Climate Change And Environment To Sponsor Project Of Carbon Ambassadors Programme

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment will sponsor the Sustainable Agriculture Container, a project developed by the second batch of the Carbon Ambassadors Programme, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced.

The project aims to transform used service containers into sustainable agricultural containers, to spread environmental awareness, and encourage people to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle.

DEWA launched the second batch of the Programme in October 2015, as per the United Nations Development Programme’s criteria, with support from the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon).

The programme has theory and practical sessions with three learning modules that vary between e-learning courses and in-class lectures. These modules include Prince2 (Project Management), Green House Gas (GHG) Accounting Training, and Energy Saving Company (ESCO) Training. In addition to these modules, DEWA also provides a range of opportunities to delegates of the programme, enabling them to participate in global conferences, and workshops on sustainability such as COP21 in Paris, France, the IRENA Assembly, and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

The practical aspect of the programme consists of implementing turnkey projects, in partnership with a number of government and private entities. The project aims to retrofit service containers, into sustainably functioning containers. The delegates have been assigned teams, under the supervision of partners. A panel of judges will evaluate the projects, and select the three best teams.

"The ministry strives to contribute to the UAE’s efforts in establishing the fundamentals of sustainable development and in protecting the environment. In line with our leadership’s directives, we are pleased to collaborate with the various entities in the country in order to attain development and prosperity," said Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.

"Our collaboration with DEWA aims to support innovative initiatives by the youth, in the areas of environmental sustainability in synergy with the ‘Green Economy for Sustainable Development’ initiative, launched by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. During WETEX 2015, the ministry supported the innovative project of the first group of Carbon Ambassadors. We commend DEWA’s sponsorship of this important programme and ensuring its success," Al Zeyoudi added.

"DEWA is keen on training the youth and developing their capabilities so that they are effective in achieving sustainable development. The ministry encourages innovation by providing the suitable tools and training programmes that develop knowledge capabilities," Al Zeyoudi said in conclusion.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, "In adherence with the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, and the Dubai Plan 2021, to make Dubai sustainable with its resources and make its environmental elements clean, healthy, and sustainable, DEWA is committed to involving the youth in achieving sustainable development objectives, as part of the UAE Vision 2021, to transform the UAE into one of the best countries in the world by 2021.

"We greatly appreciate the efforts of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment towards supporting green initiatives and development projects. These include the projects that focus on predicting the future, and contribute towards providing a more sustainable environment for generations to come. The Carbon Ambassadors are the next generation of leaders and experts who will implement ambitious national strategies and plans, as well as contribute to innovating new initiatives and programmes, to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and establish Dubai's position as a global hub for clean energy and energy efficiency." he added.
