Médecins Sans Frontières
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, humanitarian organisation whose objective is to provide assistance to populations in distress. MSF delivers emergency aid to the victims of armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation.
MSF provides primary health care, performs surgery, rehabilitates hospitals and clinics, runs nutrition and sanitation programmes, trains local medical personnel, and provides mental health care. Through longer-term programs its teams treat diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, sleeping sickness and HIV/AIDS.
Annually, some 4,700 volunteer doctors, nurses and support staff go to the field where they work alongside 26,000 locally recruited staff. In the UAE, an MSF regional office was created under the patronage of H.E.Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan in 1991 to raise awareness and funds for its field activities.
In recognition of the organization’s humanitarian work, Médecins Sans Frontières was awarded:
The Nobel Peace Prize in 1999,
Emirates Health Foundation Prize in 2002 and
King Hussein Humanitarian Leadership prize in 2004.
What we do?
In emergencies and their aftermath, MSF provides health care, rehabilitates and runs hospitals and clinics, performs surgery, battles epidemics, carries out vaccination campaigns, operates feeding centers for malnourished children, and offers mental health care. When needed, MSF also constructs wells and dispenses clean drinking water, and provides shelter materials like blankets and plastic sheeting.
