Drive Safe, Save Lives
Recognizing the need for greater awareness about road safety within Abu Dhabi, the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD) has launched an important road safety initiative, ’Drive Safe, Save Lives’, to educate the public.
This road safety initiative addresses the issues surrounding road safety and seatbelt usage within Abu Dhabi and builds broader awareness of the importance of driving safely and the value of human lives.
The campaign will be launched through advertisements placed on television, cinema, newspapers, magazines, radio, lamp posts, and billboards throughout Abu Dhabi Emirate. Through this initiative HAAD will be spreading the word about the importance of road safety.
The major risk factors impacting the severity of road traffic injuries are:
Speed
Failure to use seat belts
Failure to use child safety restraints
The biggest road safety issues facing Abu Dhabi Emirate today are:
Speeding and dangerous driving
Lack of use of seatbelt
Only 11 % of UAE nationals wear seat belts
Only 44 % of non nationals wear seat belts
Lack of use of child safety restraints
Use of mobiles while driving
Over the past two years fatal injuries were the leading cause of death in Abu Dhabi Emirate, representing 22% of the total causes of death:
An alarming 69% of injury deaths in the emirate of Abu Dhabi are caused by road traffic injuries
Globally, Abu Dhabi Emirate has one of the world’s highest rates of road deaths
There are an average of 38 deaths per month due to fatal road traffic injuries in Abu Dhabi Emirate
Males represent 89% of fatal road traffic injuries
Abu Dhabi Police data show that between 1985 and 2005
The severity ratio of fatalities per 1000 motor vehicle crashes increased 5 fold
The severity ratio of injuries per crash increased 6 fold+
The main cause of death among children 0 – 14 year olds is fatal injuries, of which 63% are traffic related
Among vehicle occupants aged 0-14 who died in crash, none were found to have been using a safety restraint
Around 23% of causes of all road traffic crashes are due to
Irresponsible behavior and
Lack of respect for other road users
