Al Ain is known as the Garden City, and is renowned for its oases, parks and gardens. Vast plantations of palm trees, lush gardens and landscaping add to the beauty of the city, and there are more than 70 parks equipped with leisure and entertainment facilities. In addition, there are many tourist attractions such as forts and museums, wildlife parks and archaeological sites, festivals and sports events, green areas such as Green Mubazzarah at the foot of city’s striking landmark Jebel Hafeet, as well as the spectacular sand dunes and the Hajar Mountains just outside Al Ain.
The fertile soil of the area’s five oases has attracted human settlements since ancient times. These oases have been important destinations throughout history for traders’ caravans crossing the desert to buy and sell water, dates and other agricultural products.
Forts & Castles
Al Ain is characterized by the presence of a large number of castles and forts, ancient houses, mosques and towers of various shapes round, square of in a spiral design. All together, there are 66 historical structures; some built as homes during times of peace and others for defensive purposes during wars or to protect against raids. Other historical sites were built to serve religious and educational purposes, such as mosques. These structures are spread throughout the city and its outskirts, near oases and in villages on the fringes of Al Ain. Most of the forts and landmarks have been restored in recent year in recognition of their5 historical importance.
Green Mubazzarah (Mubzara Al Khadra)
Following the discovery of plentiful, fresh water flowing underground in the Mubazzarah area (100-200 metres beneath the ground with capacity of 25,000 gallons per hour), the late president Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan ordered the formerly dry and rocky area to the transformed into a park, which today attracts people from all over the UAE and the region to visit its greenery and naturally heated spring water. Al Ain Municipality has built a number of visitor facilities in the area. Including a man-made lake. Sun shades, car parks, swimming pools for men and women and one of the highest fountains in the Middle East. Visitors can go boating in the lake filled by nearby hot water springs.
