The Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA),
TAQA was founded in 2005 when the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) privatized its assets. Abu Dhabi is not only TAQA’s global headquarters but remains its home market and as such is of immense importance to the company and one of its key strategies is to retain its position as the premier domestic energy company. Today, the company is responsible for 85% of the country’s water and electricity needs.
In total, TAQA owns six businesses in the UAE that between them produce nearly 7,500 MW of power and 600 million imperial gallons of water a day (MIGD) of desalination capacity. The operations are spread throughout the UAE although the majority are based in Abu Dhabi.
Emirates CMS Power Company
Located northeast of Abu Dhabi city, the Taweelah A2 Power and Desalination Plant produces 777 MW of power and is capable of producing 50 MIGD. The plant was purchased from CMS Generation Company – a US-based operation – in May 2007 and is now owned by the Emirates Power Company which itself is 60% owned by Emirate Power Company and 40% by TAQA Generation LLC.
Shuweihat CMS International Company, PJSC
Part owned and fully operated by TAQQ Generation LLC, the Shuweihat S1 Power and Desalination Plant came online in June 2005 and is located on the Arabian Gulf approximately 250 kms southwest of Abu Dhabi city. Its five Siemens turbines and five Heat Recovery Steam Generators produce 1500 MW of power while its 100 MIGD of desalination capacity comes courtesy of six Fisia MSF desalination units.
Gulf Total Tractebel Power Company
The plant at the Gulf Total Tracetebel Power Company (GTTPC) went live in April 2003 initially providing 221 MW and 28 MIGD although it has now been extensively upgraded and delivers 1350 MW and 84 MIGD.
Taweelah Asia Power Company
The Taweelah project consists of three separate units all located on the same site. The initial plant went online in 1997 and consisted of six steam turbines producing 876 MW of power and 75 MIGD desalination but an extension of the plant has added a further 200 MW and 23 MIGD of capacity. A second extension, planned to come online in July 2008, will add even more capacity bringing the total to 2,000 MW and 160 MIGD all of which is supplied to ADWEC.
Arabian Power Company
20 km east of Abu Dhabi on Sas Al Nakhl is the Umm Al Nar Power and Desalination Plant owned and operated by the Arabian Power Company. The plant produces 1700 MW of power and 160 MIGD of desalination. In addition to the energy generating capacity of the plant, the site incorporates two new indoor grid stations which extend the capacity of the existent 132 kV grid station.
Emirates Sembcorp Water and Power Company
Consisting of four gas turbines each producing 94 MW and two steam turbines generating 137 MW each, Fujairah has a total capacity of 650 MW and 100 MIGD. The plant was first commissioned in July 2004 although new works are expected to be completed by March 2009 and will expand the capacity of the plant which is based just north of Qidfa in Fujairah.
