Abu Dhabi International Book Fair global platform for dialogue between civilisations, cultures
Navdeep Singh Suri, Indian Ambassador to the UAE, stated that India’s being selected as the guest of honour at the 29th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair reflects the strong relations between the leaderships and the people of the UAE and India, as well as their vision of cultural cooperation. In an interview with WAM, Suri said that India will participate in the fair to showcase its culture to participants from over 50 countries through a senior delegation comprising 100 members at the Guest of Honour Pavilion, which is the largest at the event.
He added that 30 publishing houses from India will take part in the fair, along with leading Indian writers and authors, to highlight the shared cultural diversity between India and the UAE, through various discussions and seminars focussing on children’s books.
Pointing out that the relations between India and the UAE are based on a history of cooperation and partnership, further proved by India’s selection as the guest of honour at the fair, he added that India has a rich heritage of culture, literature, science and art, and over 24 official languages, along with many dialects.
Suri stressed that India not only has a major movie industry, but also an influential cultural scene that includes over 16,000 publishing houses, which are keen to expand their presence in the Gulf region, especially among the UAE’s Indian community.
At the fair, the Indian delegation will present interactive sessions, organise ten discussion sessions and workshops for Indian writers, highlight the country’s traditional heritage, recite poetry from Indian provinces, and showcase various Indian arts and folklore through performances from three artistic companies, he added.
The annual fair is a major event in the publishing sector in the Middle East and North Africa, and is a platform for local and international talent to present their work and communicate with the sector’s leaders and influencers. The fair’s 29th edition will involve over 1,000 participants from more than 50 countries, who will showcase 500,000 books.
