First All-Female Emirati Engineering Co-hort Returns From NASA

The Arab Youth Venture Foundation (AYVF), the innovative not-for-profit educational consultancy founded in UAE in 2007, best known for its Space Act Agreement for Middle East educational programs with NASA, the United States’ National Aeronautics & Space Administration, today announces the successful return of its first all female UAE NASA intern co-hort, raising the total number of historic Emirati interns to 16.

The three outstanding UAE students, Hayam Al Blooshi and Ghena Al Hanae from Abu Dhabi, and Maryam Yammahi of Fujeirah, conducted mission based research at NASA in areas relating to Mars exploration rovers, water based absorption impacting to space suit design, and waste-water treatment.

To date, of the 16 UAE NASA interns, fifty percent (50%) have entered their professional careers with companies such as DEWA, ADNOC, Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies, ADWEA, and NPCC. Thirty percent (30%) will enter their Engineering master’s programs at leading schools such as Stanford University, Cornell University, Columbia University, and Masdar this fall. Twenty percent (20%) remain in UAE universities.

Mubadala Aerospace has sponsored 60% of the current UAE NASA alumni (10) with other prominent sponsors such as Mubadala ICT, Boeing International, Lockheed Martin, and Advanced Water Technologies supporting the UAE rising stars.

Michael Flynn, Principal Scientific Investigator at NASA Ames Research Center and mentor to four UAE interns since 2010 believes, “Exposure to NASA’s innovative research methods and technologies will further build practical skills in UAE talent that will help them evolve into the next generation of experts in UAE’s leading fields."

Lisa LaBonte, founder and CEO of AYVF concurs, “The UAE intern pool represents such a dynamic group of young aspiring professionals and their enthusiasm and goals for their work and future are palpable.”

Maryam Yammahi, a chemical engineering student and the first intern from Fujeirah who worked on solid waste processing for space shuttle missions, states “the time I spent working at NASA was very valuable and I am returning home with a huge quantity of knowledge, respect for different ways of doing things, and many new colleagues.
