Emirates ID and Zakat Fund sign MoU to support humanitarian and social work in UAE
(23 June 2012)

The Emirates Identity Authority has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Zakat Fund with the aim of supporting humanitarian and social work in the UAE and promoting the partnership existing between the two parties in a bid to spread Zakat awareness, contribute to the revival of Zakat and achieve as much social solidarity and compassion in the society as possible.

The MoU came as part of the keenness of the Emirates ID and the Marriage Fund on contributing to supporting the national families of limited income across the UAE and also as part of the two parties’ bid to develop strategic initiatives and promote their co-operation in all common fields with the aim of meeting the needs of the UAE society.

Under the MoU, the Emirates ID pledged to co-operate with the Zakat Fund to increase the Zakat revenues by committing itself to study the possibility of deducting part of its service fees for charitable work, contributing to sponsoring a number of Zakat Fund’s automatic teller machines and allocating free sites for Zakat Fund’s services at the Emirates ID-affiliated registration centers across the UAE.

The two sides agreed that the Zakat Fund benefit from the database provided by the Emirates ID through obtaining accurate statistics to help it conduct researches and through activating electronic linkage between the two sides.

The MoU included the possibility of electronic linkage between the two sides through their websites with links to such services as the payment of Zakat online.

The MoU was signed in the Emirates ID headquarters in Abu Dhabi in the presence of Dr. Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Emirates ID Director General, and Abdullah Bin Aqeeda Al Muhairi, Secretary General of Zakat Fund.

Signing an MoU with the Zakat Fund comes as part of the Emirates ID’s keenness on participating in the social responsibility activities and initiatives by considering the opportunities available to participate in the leading projects provided by the Zakat Fund, Al Khouri said, noting that the MoU is a new initiative to be added to the many previous ones that were launched by the Emirates ID for supporting the charitable, humanitarian and social agencies and corporations in the UAE.

This partnership reflects the belief of the two sides in the importance of benefiting from the potentials of both the Emirates ID and Zakat Fund and comes as part of the common strategic plans and projects aimed at upgrading the concepts and practices of the humanitarian and social responsibility by which the UAE and its prudent and generous leadership are characterized.

Meanwhile, Al Muhairi expressed his happiness about signing this MoU, which is regarded as an application and a translation of the federal government’s concepts of promoting co-operation and co-ordination among the federal entities and organizations. The MoU also reflects the endeavor of the two organizations to exchange knowledge, experience and expertise in the corporate excellence field as well as advice and consultation for supporting modernization and corporate development efforts in both parties, he added.

Al Muhairi underscored the Zakat Fund’s keenness on consolidating co-operation with the Emirates ID in several fields, noting that the Fund activated work with the ID card and adopted it in its transactions as a major document for the Fund’s transactions. The Emirates Identity Authority also made it possible for the Zakat Fund to benefit from its database for supporting the Fund’s work, obtaining credible statistics and conducting researches and surveys, he said. Apart from allowing electronic linkage between the two sides, the Emirates ID is considering the possibility to deduct part of the fees of its services such a card renewal and other services in favor of the Fund’s projects, he added.

Al Muhairi valued the role played by Al Khouri, who welcomed the idea of putting all the Emirates ID’s potentials available in its registration centers at the disposal of the Zakat Fund’s offices in addition to developing strategic initiatives and promoting co-operation between the Emirates ID and the Zakat Fund for supporting and encouraging humanitarian and social work in a bid to serve the UAE and UAE citizens and residents.

The MoU is based on the keenness of both parties on supporting the efforts for exchanging knowledge and experience in the field of humanitarian and charity work and corporate excellence and development. It is also based on their keenness on translating the federal government’s concepts for promoting co-operation and co-ordination among the official entities and on their interest in upgrading their role in firmly establishing an ideal environment that adopts the best social and humanitarian practices all over the UAE.

The two sides agreed to do their utmost to support and promote their role in the humanitarian and social fields through the Emirates ID’s contribution to sponsoring and supporting the Fund’s media and awareness campaigns and holding courses on Zakat jurisprudence and accounting.

It is worthwhile that the social responsibility initiatives to be made by the Fund through this MoU are embodied in the projects for sponsoring university students of national families of limited income, projects for helping vulnerable national families, Tawasul project for helping families of prisoners and "Kafel" project for sponsoring orphans and supporting their families.
