DLA Piper, a global law firm, has become the first law firm to join the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group, one of the leading sustainability organisations based in Abu Dhabi and part of the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency. DLA Piper joined as part of its global corporate responsibility programme and the membership builds on its extensive regional programme that has been running for over five years.

Incubated by the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency, and with the support of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi Emirate, ADSG is a membership-based organisation whose mission is to promote sustainability management in Abu Dhabi by providing learning and knowledge sharing opportunities for government, private companies and not for profit organisations. At present, ADSG has 26 members and is open to organisations looking to practice and champion sustainability in Abu Dhabi.

“As an international firm, we have the responsibility to actively promote sustainability management and reporting within our business. Our involvement with ADSG we will support our environmental and social efforts in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and more broadly in the UAE," commented Abdul Aziz Al Yaqout, Regional Managing Partner, DLA Piper Middle East. "Corporate responsibility is one of the key elements of our firm and we actively encourage all our staff to be involved, whether that be through pro bono activity or volunteering, and we’re proud of the impact we make within our local communities across the region."

In 2007, DLA Piper became one of the first law firms to introduce a Global Sustainability Initiative, providing the firm with a strategic and integrated approach to managing the environmental impact of the business. This also to led to DLA Piper becoming the first and still to this day one of the only law firms to achieve global certification to ISO 14001, the worldwide standard for environmental management that ensures they take account of environmental impacts and operate in a responsible way.

As DLA Piper moves toward adopting a baseline of internally efficient operations, it seems likely that the next phase of sustainable and responsible business practice will concentrate on collaborating with others to address collective environmental impacts and how the firm uses its expertise to support their clients and the environmental issues they face.
