The ‘Life in Motion’ photography contest, held by National Geographic Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with National Geographic Al Arabiya Magazine, as part of its Photomentaries 2012 festival, has come to a sensational ending as the channel announced the names of the winners. Taking first place is AmriArfianto from the UAE, whose stunning image captures the essence of Dubai’s always-moving culture.
As the competition’s winner, Arfiantowon the Grand Prize of having his photograph being featured in National Geographic Al Arabiya Magazine, and receivedphotography equipment worth US$5000.
Taking second place with his photograph of a man riding a cycle through a puddle creating ripples in its wake is Firos Syed from Qatar. In third place is RehamDarwishfrom Egypt, with her triptych presentation of Sufi whirling dancers. Both Syed and Darwish will have their winning photograph featured on National Geographic Abu Dhabi TV, andreceive photography equipment worth US$2500 and US$1500 respectively.
“The response we received to the ‘Life in Motion’ competition was outstanding, and a true demonstration of the incredible photography talent that the Middle East has. There were more than double the number of entrants this year than for our inaugural competition in 2011,demonstrating the strong association of photography and imagery with the National Geographic brand,” said Rohit D’Silva, Senior Vice President and General Manager (Middle East & North Africa), National Geographic Abu Dhabi. “We are committed to fulfilling this association by continuing to deliver engaging television shows to our audience, such as those programs featured during the highly successful Photomentaries 2012 festival.”
Mohamed Al Hammadi, Editor in Chief of National Geographic Al Arabiya Magazine, and a jury in the judging panel for the competition: “National Geographic Al Arabiya is committed to supporting local talents from around the region, and providing them with a platform on which to communicate the wealth of amazing regional stories there are to be told. Having a photograph featured in National Geographic magazine is a dream come true for many photographers around the world. National Geographic photographer, George Steinmetz, was on the contest’s judging panel, and commented: “The ‘Life in Motion’ competition allowed the Middle East to demonstrate its impressive creative talent. To be a successful photographer takes more than the ability to click a button; you have to have artistic flair as well as the ability to portray a story through an image. AmriArfianto’s entry did exactly that.”
The ‘Life in Motion’ photo contestwas the second photography competition held by National Geographic Abu Dhabi in the Middle East. Open to the public across the Arab world, entrants were encouraged to capture how the world around us in constant motion.
