Bonding Women Through Sports In Abu Dhabi
(17 April 2012)
Reem Team invites women to participate in Swap & Kick 2 friendly tournament

A new all-female football team has taken shape in the UAE capital and now the soccer girls are encouraging women around the emirates to join them in a friendly tournament during the first week of May at the Dome@Rawdhat.

The Reem Team trains under the stewardship of six football experts at the Dome@Rawdhat on Airport Road and comprises a host of different nationalities – from UAE nationals and Canadian, British and Lebanese expatriates.

“The team was initiated as a result of a group of girls’ passion for football,” said Hemyan Al Meraikhi, Team Manager. “We started with nine members and have now grown to 30 in a space of two months.

“The team is committed to becoming one of the best female football teams in the region and they’re already working hard together both on and off the pitch to achieve their goals. Their dedication to the game and the way they constantly push themselves to improve are inspiring.”

Since its inception, the Reem Team girls have been as active as possible to create events and activities which will add value to their love of the game. With two tournaments currently being organised – Swap and Kick 2 and the GCC Women’s Football Tournament – the girls are also keen to take part in local charity initiatives taking place around the UAE.

“Our aim is to be more than football players by initiating and organising more sports activities and educating the younger generation on the importance of sports. We hope to play a crucial role by placing Abu Dhabi on the map as the capital of female sports development in the GCC”, said UAE national Dr Hessa Al-Mazrui, who usually plays in the midfield.

“It’s outstanding to see how the team has grown so quickly in only two months. The Reem Team gives us a sense of belonging, no matter what your nationality. It’s made us feel like we are united against all the odds”.

Reem Investments built the Dome@Rawdhat to create a vibrant sporting community at the gateway to Abu Dhabi. The facility is home to Manchester United Soccer Schools, the Abu Dhabi Football League, the Rawdhat Sevens League and the Mini-Kickers programme for 3 to 6 year olds. More than 18,000 people use the facilities every month.
