Abu Dhabi International Book Fair launches a book drive
(24 March 2012)
Campaign aimed at collecting books from public and educational institutions to offer less privileged readers accessibility to books

As part of its commitment to give back to the underprivileged sector of the society who love reading, the 22nd annual Abu Dhabi International Book Fair [ADIBF] 2012 has launched a Book Drive. This first-of-its-kind ADIBF initiative aims to collect books, old and new on any subject, from members of the public and educational institutions.

The collected books will be later donated to the less fortunate readers in a chosen Third World country, giving them the opportunity to read and gain knowledge. To support the book drive, collection boxes have been installed at vantage points throughout the city and at the ADIBF venue –Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre [ADNEC] throughout the duration of book fair.

ADIBF has partnered with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) for the Book Drive with ADEC helping with the collection of book from various schools across the Emirate.  In addition to that ADIBF is reaching out to students in other Emirates through libraries at various educational institutions and readers within the community. Collection boxes have also been placed at universities, colleges and schools in the UAE

Mr. Jumaa Abdulla Al-Qubaisi, Director of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, said: “It is a well established fact that the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair offers an international platform for the exchange of new ideas, debates and educational programs for acclaimed novelists and the general public. However, our core objective behind the book fair is to help inspire and promote reading habits among the youth and adults. We wish to make ADIBF the treasure trove of information and knowledge – helping everyone to read and discover whilst taking books to reader where books are not readily available to them,.”

Members of the public are also encouraged to donate books and support the campaign by bringing their books to the book fair and drop them in the Book Drive Drop Box.

The six day ADIBF will operate daily from 9am to 10pm every day, except for Friday when it will be open from 4pm to 10pm.
