50 students took part in a beachside competition hosted by Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) to raise awareness of the conservation needs of marine turtles and to mark UAE Environment Day on 4th February.
Held at The Westin Dubai, the youngsters armed themselves with craft materials and set to work on their creative projects, after learning about marine turtles’ biology, lifecycle, threats and conservation needs as part of EWS-WWF’s Marine Turtle Conservation Project.
Children aged between 6 and 12 were asked to illustrate their very own comic strip tale with a central turtle conservation message. Students aged 13-18 faced the challenge of producing a 3D model of the majestic animal.
Hoor Obaid Ali, Fatima Salim Mohamed and Badria Mohamed Obaid from Umm Al Moemneen School were announced as the winners of the turtle model competition after a judging panel from EWS-WWF, HSBC Bank Middle East and the Ministry of Education assessed the artwork. Nadia Atlaf from Our Own English School and Hamdan Saeed Mohamed from Al Hala School were also named winners of the conservation comic strip.
This event comes as part of ongoing efforts by EWS-WWF to understand and protect the migratory routes of Hawksbill turtles in the region through the Marine Turtle Conservation Project. The third year of turtle tagging will start later this year in the UAE, Iran, Qatar and Oman.
The beach at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina and The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina was recently awarded with a Blue Flag, making it the first Blue Flag beach in Dubai and marking a huge achievement for EWS-WWF as the National Coordinator for the global environmental accolade.
