The Abu Dhabi leg of the community event and cancer research fundraiser, the Terry Fox Run, is set to take place on the Abu Dhabi Corniche on February 17 2012. The Run, now in its 17th year in the Capital, is held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Advisor to His Highness the President of the UAE.

The Terry Fox Run, also known as ’The Marathon of Hope’,gives cancer patients the hope that one day, a cure, or even prevention, for cancer will be found.

The Runplays a major role in supporting medical research that is not only helping to raise cancer awareness among the community, but that is also financially contributing to research conducted here in the UAE. The UAE plays an important part in the accelerating search for the cure and prevention of cancer,thanks to the efforts of the annual Terry Fox Runs held in Abu Dhabi along with other cities in the UAE.

Since 1995, approximately 65,000 people have participated in the Run around the UAE. To date, money raised by the UAE has funded 35 projectsvalued at AED7.73 millionof world-class, innovative cancer research in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the UAE University in Al Ain. The research is undertaken by UAE-based researchers and scientists, and focuses on the needs of UAE citizens and residents.

On the Run day itself, the programme will begin at 7:00am where a DJ will play the latest music to get everyone in the mood. A 15-minute aerobic session will help warm-up the crowd, and the 40-member Abu Dhabi Police band will play the UAE national anthem minutes before the Run begins.

The Run will kick off from the Abu Dhabi Corniche (a.k.a.: the Fanzone) to the car park near the Corniche Hospital, and back. People can walk, run, roller-blade or skateboard, and the course is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers; however, cycling will not be permitted due to safety precautions. Registration begins at 7 am and the Run itself will start at 10am. Cash and cheque donations are kindly accepted on the event day.
