The Dhafra Festival on Saturday was launched by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) in Madinat Zayed, the Western Region, Under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Features of the festival is the fifth Mazayna Al Dhafra (camel beauty contest), which . The festival will be held from the 17th till the 28th of December 2011.
The Festival which is the largest of its kind attracted a large audiences from the UAE and other GCC countries, according to organizers in a press release.
Organizers of the event expected heated competitions among the participants over the past years due to the higher numbers of competitors that gained lots of experience from the previous festivals.
The total value of prizes for the winners this year were increased to AED 40 million, including 155 Range Rovers and Nissan Patrols, and many cash prizes.
Mohammed Khalaf Al-Mazrouei, Chairman of the Higher organizing committee who is also Director General of ADACH and Culture and Heritage Advisor at the Court of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi hailed the support extended to the event by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region More than 1300 camel owners and 2000 camels are taking part in competitions of over 50 legs.
Other competitions include Packaging Competition and camels’ auction, Mahalib (camel milking competition), handicrafts completions, photography competition, heritage market, and the children’s village as well as the yearly emirati handicrafts market which includes about 160 shops.
The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage has recently registered Sadu, traditional weaving and fabric production, as part of the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
