Abu Dhabi University Hosts 2nd Annual Spelling Bee

The Abu Dhabi University recently hosted 160 Grade 5 students representing 17 schools from across the UAE who participated in the University’s 2nd Annual Spelling Bee.

The annual competition aims to enhance the students’ spelling, reading and composition skills, increase their vocabulary, and strengthen their understanding of the English language. Alex Rashed of Al Yasmina School won the gold medal, while Eric Bosco Quadros of Abu Dhabi’s Indian School received the silver medal, and Isabella Chu from the Emirates National School won the bronze medal.

Commenting on the importance of the 2nd Annual Spelling Bee, Dr. James Mackin Provost of Abu Dhabi University explained that the competition gives Grade 5 students the opportunity to further develop their vocabulary in an educational, interactive and fun method.

"Spelling Bees are known for helping students enhance their skills, increase their vocabulary and encouraging them to learn word etymology, and the correct usage of certain words. They are also a great way to improve the student’s English language skills and will contribute significantly throughout the various stages of their education, developing them into young eloquent individuals", added Dr. Mackin.

The schools that took part in the 2nd Annual Spelling Bee at Abu Dhabi University are: International Community School, Rawafed Private School, Nahda National School, Canadian International School, Emirates Private School/ City Campus-Girls ,Emirates Private School/ City Campus- Boys ,Emirates Private School/ Al Ain Campus, Emirates Private School- Mohammed Bin Zayed Campus, British international School, Al Yasmina School, Abu Dhabi Indian School, Sherwood Academy, Australian School of Abu Dhabi, Rosary School, The Glenelg School of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Grammar School and Sunrise Private School.
