EAD And Shell Abu Dhabi To Bring Enviro-Spellathon To Children In UAE
(26 November 2011)

The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Shell Abu Dhabi renewed their partnership, which will help to continue to bring the award-winning Enviro-Spellathon to schools and students across Abu Dhabi emirate.

The Enviro-Spellathon is an award-winning annual environmental education programme that has been running in Abu Dhabi schools since 2001, in collaboration with the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature (EWS-WWF) and with support from the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC).

The Enviro-Spellathon targets students, ages four to 13, from primary and intermediate levels in all Abu Dhabi emirate schools. At the beginning of each academic year, EAD distributes a series of educational booklets to each school. The booklets, which are being used to teach subjects in the Abu Dhabi curriculum, contain fun and educational information and activities developed specifically for students in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

At the end of the year, students are tested on the information in the booklet. EAD then honors those students who achieved a success grade and have completed the programme. Schools can register for the Enviro-Spellathon at any time during the year, as long as they complete the tests and submit their test results by the end of March.

Over the past 10 years, the Enviro-Spellathon has witnessed a surge in participation. In its first year in 2001, the programme attracted 172 schools and nearly 45,000 students. So far this academic year, 337 government and private schools, from a total of 452 schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, have registered to participate in the Enviro-Spellathon.

Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, EAD Secretary General, said: "Thanks to the Enviro-Spellathon, thousands of teachers and parents have already reported a welcome transformation in their students’ values and behavior towards the environment".

Dr. John Barry, Shell’s Vice President of Technical ’&’ Production MENA, Abu Dhabi Country Chair, said: "Our commitment to caring for the environment - exemplified by our long term partnership with the Agency - is a reflection of how at Shell we view sustainable development, which is at the core of our general business principles".
