The world’s largest professional health and safety association - The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) – has recognised Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) for its “excellent and sustained” health and safety performance during Phase One, awarding the smelter a “High Commendation” in the Best Health and Safety Achievements in Construction category in London last month.
The accolade was presented during the 5TH annual SHP ISOH Awards at a sparkling ceremony at the London Hilton, Park Lane on Thursday 20 October, attended by over 500 company representatives of award finalists from all over the world. With over 39,000 members worldwide, the IOSH is considered a global think tank for all health and safety best practices, with a history of helping many countries, to develop plans and programs.
Commenting on the accolade, EMAL President and CEO, Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, said: “Safety is one of EMAL’s core values, and we are committed to achieving nothing short of excellence for the benefit and well being of our people and contractors. To be recognised as a global health and safety leader shows that our culture of ‘safety first last and always’ is on the right track, as we continue to refine and improve our workforce through into construction of EMAL Phase Two.”
A deep rooted and workable culture of occupational health and safety was established by EMAL in the initial construction stages of the project, which carried through into the operational stage of Phase One. As a result, EMAL has been established as a global aluminium industry leader in health and safety. The EMAL Phase One project has achieved many occupational health and safety milestones, working a total of more than 90 million hours with zero fatalities and achieving an industry-lowest LTI frequency rate of less than 0.02 (an average of one LTI for every 11.2 million hours), which is a significant achievement considering the magnitude of such a mega project.
