In celebration of the recently-born Mhorr gazelle, Al Ain Zoo has launched a competition on Facebook and Twitter inviting fans and followers to submit their unique and creative ideas to name the newest addition to the zoo’s world renowned antelope & gazelle collection. Only two-months old, the orphaned gazelle has been hand-reared by Al Ain Zoo’s professional zookeepers and team of veterinary experts after its mother passed away only hours after giving birth.
Dr. Arshad Toosy, Manager Veterinary Operations at Al Ain Zoo, commented:
“The Mhorr gazelle is the largest of the true gazelles. The species has rapidly declined in number in recent years and today exist only in captivity – where breeding and re-introduction programs are its only hope for survival. Our naming competition in Social Media is a fun and creative way to learn more about these beautiful animals. We are thrilled that the orphaned young male has been in great health since birth, and I am confident he will be awarded a special name that commemorates the beginning of his life in Al Ain.”
Al Ain Zoo fans are encouraged to participate by logging on to the zoo’s Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/AlAinZooUAE or Twitter page at www.twitter.com/AlAinZooUAE. The winner of the competition will not only receive the honour of naming the gazelle but will also be given five complimentary tickets to Al Ain Zoo – two for adults and three for children – as well as the book Sounds of Nature.
All suggestions must be submitted by November 27 via e-mail to mhorrgazelle@awpr.ae. A jury comprising of Al Ain Zoo staff from various departments will review all suggestions and select the best name. The winner will be announced in early December.
