• DHL mobilizes 152 containers and hundreds of tons for leading round the world yacht race
• Abu Dhabi leg of the event runs 12th – 14th January 2012
DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, supports the 11th Volvo Ocean Race, the world’s premier round-the world yacht race which takes place off Abu Dhabi’s Corniche from December 31 to January 14 with a complete logistics solution. DHL’s support for the event, which started in Alicante, Spain, on 29 October, includes transportation of high-end gear for the crews and haulage of pavilions for visitors to the ten Race Villages, over the 72,000 kilometers-long route, as well as short-term supply of spare parts in case of an emergency. DHL uses a total of 152 containers for shipping the hundreds of tons of materials.
“Our proceedings will be monitored from an international control center especially established for the race. We ensure the smooth procedure of the race by supplying the race organizers, race teams, and partners with the full range of freight forwarding and venue logistics services. From the starting point in Alicante, Spain, through all ten races, including Abu Dhabi, to the finish in Galway, Ireland, DHL will be responsible for air, sea, and land transportation of the highly valuable equipment”, said Reinier Vens, DHL Project Director for the Volvo Ocean Race.
DHL will move two identical sets of 40ft ocean freight containers with a volume of 67,0 cubic meter, which include loft hand tools, lifejacket kits and rig lifting sling sets per team according to the leapfrog principle. The teams use the content of the first container during the first leg while DHL has already delivered the second container to the next destination. Upon arrival, the teams take over the second container to use it during the next leg while DHL prepares the previously used first container for the next stopover. This method guarantees on-time delivery and availability of the necessary equipment as DHL is always one step ahead of the boats.
In addition to the ocean freight containers, DHL provides each team with a number of air cargo containers. In case of an emergency such as a broken mast, DHL is responsible for immediately delivery of a substitute. To cover such contingencies, a spare parts depot has been established at the airport in Amsterdam, enabling DHL to move massive goods such as masts up to 100 feet-tall to any destination around the globe in quick time.
Frank-Uwe Ungerer, Country Manager for DHL in the UAE, said: “The Volvo Ocean Race is a real test of skill and endurance for the teams involved and, as such, it demands the very best from its partners behind the scenes. The sheer scale involved in making the world’s most renowned yacht race a success is what DHL excels in. No logistical challenge is too great and we have an exceptional track record in partnering with world class sporting events such as the Volvo Ocean Race.”
The seamless cooperation of all DHL business units guarantees a smooth run of the whole race. DHL offers its clients customized solutions, complying with individual needs having specific requirements. Due to the anticipatory planning, undertaken by DHL, the company is able to react in a flexible and timely way – in case of emergencies.
