Over 150 children and supervisors from 15 plus Arab and international countries are gathering in Abu Dhabi for the 31st Arab Children Congress on November 13th 2011 at the Emirates Palace Hotel.
The Arab Children Congress, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Supreme Chairperson of the Family Development Foundation, and of UAE Women’s General Union, and Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood; and headed by the presence of Her Majesty Queen Noor Al Hussein, Founder and Chairwoman of Board of Trustees of King Hussein Foundation in the Kingdom of Jordan; is following the theme "Sustainable Development is the Responsibility of All." The Conference, which is being held outside of Jordan for the first time since inception, is being organized by the Family Development Foundation. Mariam Mohamed Al Rumaithi, Congress Manager and Director General of the Family Development Foundation said: "We will present a variety of activities and events as part of the Congress, including the Sustainability Development Operetta written by Emirati poet Karim Maatouk, put together by Emirati composer Khalid Nasser and sang by artist Oraib, accompanied by over a hundred participating children." The Sustainability Operetta offers a representation of Abu Dhabi’s sustainability strategy and vision.
The work of art is composed of several scenes representing the story of earth as it suffers the clutches of pollution, destruction and devastation due to wars, accumulated wastes, poverty and hunger suffered by many countries. Over 100 Emirati children will participate in the performance, which will show how a ravaged earth will eventually undergo transformation and recover due to concerted international efforts and collaboration. The operetta will be accompanied by expressive paintings that tell the story of sustainability and model of desired change and sustainable development that Abu Dhabi is following to ensure a better future for generations to come.
The International Arab Congress includes a general networking session and opportunities for cultural exchange for participating children, who hail from countries that include the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Egypt, Sudan, Australia, Austria, Netherlands, and the United States. The networking session is followed by many specialized workshops where children receive hands-on vocational training in areas of interest. The workshops will be held by a group of teachers, trainers and creative professionals in poetry, drama and the arts. The aim is to cultivate an atmosphere encouraging of self-expression to an Arab and international audience through the medium of arts.
"The Congress is working towards important tangible results - the most important of which is providing participating children with knowledge on the concept of sustainability development, highlighting the achievements of the United Arab Emirates in this regard, increasing the spirit of tolerance and forgiveness, contributing to the personal development of all our young participants, increasing communication between children of different cultures and communities, highlighting their creativity, and introducing them to new ideas for environmental, health and social projects that can contribute to sustainable development," Al Rumaithi concluded .
