Since its launch, when it welcomed the public ahead of the first Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the award-winning Yas Island has evolved into a major business and leisure hub. Surrounded by the Gulf’s azure waters and lush mangroves, Yas Island has a wide range of award-winning hotels, facilities and attractions which cater to travelers from all around the world.
"It’s a very exciting time of the year at Yas Island, with the 2011 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix just around the corner,’ said Mohamed Al Mubarak, Deputy CEO and Chief Commercial Officer of ALDAR. "Visitors from all around the world will be converging on the destination for a whole new season of races, events, concerts and competitions - we’ve got so much to share with the industry at the World Travel Market in London this year, our fifth visit to the event." Yas Island is home to a number of major attractions and world-class leisure and entertainment facilities such as Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Marina, Yas Yacht Club, the Middle East’s largest Ikea outlet, and Yas Mall, which is scheduled for completion in 2013.
The Yas Viceroy Hotel, operated by Viceroy Hotels and Resorts, has developed its reputation as one of the most iconic five star hotels in Abu Dhabi, and has welcomed high-level governmental meetings, awards ceremonies and corporate conferences. The profile of the hotel has blossomed inside and outside the GCC, culminating in the award of the "World’s Best New Hotel" at the World Travel Awards in London in November 2010.
The state-of-the-art infrastructure, wide choice of facilities, venues and activities has made Yas Island a favourite destination for conference, event and exhibition organisers who can choose between six other hotels on offering 1,800 rooms and conferencing facilities. All the hotels were built around a plaza close to the Yas Marina Circuit. The hotels are owned by Aldar and operated by global brands IHG (Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites), Rezidor (Radisson Blu and Park Inn) and leading regional operator Rotana (Rotana and Centro).
Al Mubarak continued, "Since our last visit to the WTM Yas Island has come of age as a host of corporate meetings, conferences and exhibitions. Businesses appreciate Yas Island’s prime location, only 10 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport and close to downtown Abu Dhabi, as well as hotel facilities to fit every need, including ballrooms, conference halls, and a wide range of catering options, from fine dining down. Add to this the expanding list of leisure activities and it is difficult to think of a better place to hold a corporate event. " These leisure activities include concerts featuring an impressive list of the world’s most well-known musicians, including Stevie Wonder, Metallica, Prince, Janet Jackson and Shakira. Around half a million visitors have already attended the different events and concerts organised on Yas Island, the number is expected to reach one million by the end of this year with performances from Britney Spears, The Cult, Incubus, Paul McCartney and many others.
The Yas Links Golf Course, which is the first true links in the region, has further strengthened Abu Dhabi’s position as a major golf tourism destination. It was also decorated with the coveted Best Golf Course and Best Club accolades by Middle East Golfer, the region’s leading consumer golf magazine, in its 2010 awards. The Yas Links offers the ultimate links golf experience with sunny sea views on every hole, and is set to be the host venue to the 2011 and 2012 invitational tournaments.
Aldar also recently unveiled plans for a water park on Yas Island which will feature more than 40 rides and attractions including four unique rides that have never been seen before in a water park.
"Yas Island has managed to achieve some great things in the short time since its launch," added Al Mubarak. "We look forward to more achievements to come, especially with more projects and developments coming online over the coming year."
