Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) stepped up its commitment to health and safety, when the Al Taweelah smelter added ‘Health Week’ to its list of activities to ensure the well-being of its employees.
Building on previous initiatives conducted by EMAL - such as employee carbon monoxide tests during the week-long World No Tobacco Day 2011 held earlier this year - the week long health initiative is aimed to raise awareness and support employees’ health at EMAL.
Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, EMAL’s President and CEO, said: “The culture of safety first, last, and always at EMAL applies to the continued health and well-being of our employees in their lives as much as it does on site. As a responsible employer, the addition of Health Week to our list of existing activities will ensure that EMAL continues to impact positively on the lives of the people living and working in the Emirates.”
The Health Week kicked off with World Heart Day, undergoing tests for blood pressure and Body Mass Index (BMI). In addition, each employee received an educational talk and advice about the risk factors that can lead to cardiovascular disease.
The second day promoted the “World Mental Health Day” with open discussions on the prevention, promotion and treatment of mental disorders.
On the same day, EMAL Health Week also hosted Pink Ribbon Day in coordination with Al Tawam Hospital medical team and EMAL Occupational Health Clinic by conducting breast cancer awareness sessions for 33 female employees.
The remaining days of the week were dedicated to blood donations as EMAL continued its support of the Abu Dhabi Blood Bank (ADBB), with 139 volunteers taking part to directly support the Emirates’ community.
