From December 18 to 29, 2011, the Education Centre at Al Ain Zoo will be offering Winter Camps for children ages four to 14. Comprising a series of wildlife and horticulture related sessions and fun activities led by Al Ain Zoo’s expert personnel, the camps provide interactive, hands-on experiences to get children in touch with wildlife and nature in a unique outdoor learning environment.
Education Manager at Al Ain Zoo, Muna Al Dhaheri, said: “The Winter Camps at Al Ain Zoo are an entertaining educational experience in a natural environment – and all tailored specifically for children. A primary objective for the zoo is the education and inspiration of youth and nurturing the next generation of scientists and environmentalists. We believe that after an engaging and interactive visit to the zoo children will become passionate advocates for conservation and sustainability in future.”
The 2011 program includes a guided tour through the zoo with close animal encounters such as reptile handling, giraffe feeding and up-close experience with domesticated animals in Elezba, the zoo’s new petting zoo. Children will take part in team building games and animal enrichment activities such as creating fun objects to stimulate and mentally engage the animals – a great opportunity to work closely with some of the zoo’s most fascinating creatures.
A one of a kind excursion is the ‘back of house tour’, a thrilling exploration for any aspiring zoo keeper or animal lover – starting from the animal health centre where sick animals are nursed to the animals’ kitchen where the feed is prepared, to the training area of the bird house. Finally, children will also have the chance to learn about the dynamic roles and responsibilities of being a zoo keeper as well as explore their creative side through arts and crafts classes.
The first Winter Camp will take place from December 18 to 22 for ages eight to 14 and the second camp from December 25 to 29 for ages four to seven. Each Winter Camp runs from Sunday to Thursday from 8am to 1pm.
Tickets for each five-day camp, including refreshments and snacks, are priced at AED 250 per child and can be booked through the Al Ain Zoo Education Centre by calling 03-7811451 or sending an e-mail to education@awpr.ae.
The zoo is open daily from 9am to 8pm. During the Eid Al Adha holidays and on UAE National Day the zoo will be open daily from 10am to 10pm.
