Operation Smile, an international children’s medical charity with programs and chapters in more than 60 countries, and provider of free reconstructive surgery for children and young adults around the world who suffer from facial deformities, launched today its UAE chapter in a grand ceremony held here under the patronage of Sheikha Al Yaziya bint Saif Al Nahyan, wife of Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The function was attended by Reem Al Hashemi, Minister for State, Dr. Salim Al Darmaki, Undersecretary of Ministry of Health, Dr Maha Barakat, Medical and Research Director and Consultant Endocrinologist at the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) in Abu Dhabi, Dr. William P. Magee Jr., Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Operation Smile, and Kathleen S. Magee, Co-founder and President of Operation Smile, as well as a galaxy of dignitaries, top officials, academics and accredited ambassadors to the UAE.
Operation Smile UAE is a message of hope for children with facial deformities as it will coordinate programs for training physicians, manage programs to assist in reaching cleft lip and cleft palate repair self-sufficiency, and support education and research programs to eradicate cleft lips and palates.
Operation Smile UAE will build partnerships with leading academic and medical institutions and the private sector to offer training in new and advanced techniques.
It will strive to make the UAE a regional centre for Operation Smile through delivery of education, training and medical research and treatment to children in the Middle East and North Africa.
The Virginia-based Operation Smile mobilizes force of medical professionals and caring hearts who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.
Since 1982, Operation Smile through the help of dedicated medical volunteers has provided more than 2 million patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.
As one of the most prominent children’s charities in the world and with a presence in over 60 countries, Operation Smile is able to heal children’s smiles and bring hope for a better future.
