The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has completed the installation and commissioning of 50 traffic signal poles fitted with 206 bulbs, and 120 decorative street lighting poles fitted with LED lighting system along the completed surface roads of Al Salam Street Upgrading Project.
The LED system endures lighting over extended periods with minimal maintenance requirements and reduces power consumption to the least possible level; thus contributes to minimizing carbon dioxide emissions and conserving the environment.
Engineer Abdullah Saeed Al Shamsi, Acting Executive Director of Municipal Infrastructure and Assets Sector at the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, said: "The central lighting system of Al Salam Street was aimed to conform to the highest standards of safety & security for road users including the use of the most sophisticated lighting system in the globe, and accordingly add to the ongoing efforts of the Municipality to apply the highest standards of security & safety of the community, and introduce the best systems & global practices in this field." "The LED system enables control of the lighting levels by adjusting it if necessary. It is linked to the power supply system as a backup for the automatic lighting system in case of emergency in a way ensuring uninterrupted lighting of the tunnels of Al Salam Street. The system, which also provides automatic monitoring of traffic movement, includes many subsystems for controlling & monitoring the tunnel lighting, fire fighting, smoke discharge, temperature level, and toxic gases in addition to offering information related to types of vehicles, vehicular speed, and intensity of traffic movement.
The features of the LED system enable better control of the light compared to the conventional luminaries, which will result in less light spill and uniform distribution of light on targeted areas.
The tunnel lighting is fully dimmable. In accordance with the external lighting levels, the internal tunnel lighting will be dimmed automatically to ensure a smooth transition for drivers going in or out of the tunnel.
The LED lights will improve the aesthetics of the Street as it provide a good rendering to the tunnel wall tiling and will ensure that the tiles color rendering is not modified due to the lighting (standard HPS lighting is yellow, whereas LED is white, which ensures that colors appear the same as in daylight conditions).
Upon project completion, the Street will have a capacity to handle 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions; which will secure smooth traffic flow by offering an alternative bypassing the light signals of Al Salam Street in a non-stop journey across Abu Dhabi Island from Sheikh Zayed Bridge up to Al Mina.
