Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) has been recognised for its continued commitment to sustain and improve safety during construction of the Al Taweelah based smelter’s Phase One complex, with a DuPont Safety Award 2011 during the 19th World Congress on Health & Safety at Work in Istanbul last month. EMAL was one of five category winners to be honoured ahead of 70 other projects from across Europe, Middle East and Africa in the Performance Improvement Category for its achievements in health and safety in the workplace.

Now in its 10th year, the annual DuPont Safety Awards represent global recognition of the most significant projects to contribute to safety in the workplace or in greater society, and serve as an advocacy platform to further galvanise the private and public sectors to promote safety.

Speaking on the DuPont Safety Award, EMAL President and CEO, Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, said: “As one of the leading economic diversification projects in the Emirates, our main goal is to provide a better future for our nation and our people. Safety is one of EMAL’s core values and this award is in recognition of our ‘safety first last and always’ approach in all that we do.”

A deep rooted culture of safety was established by EMAL in the initial construction stages of the project, which carried through into the operational stage of Phase One. As a result, EMAL has been established as a global aluminium industry leader in health and safety. The EMAL Phase One project has achieved many safety milestones, working a total of more than 90 million hours with an average of one LTI for every 11.2 million hours and achieving an LTI frequency rate of less than 0.02, which is a significant achievement considering the magnitude of such a mega project.
