The unique Live Design Battle; Cut&Paste is pitting some of the world’s most creative artists against each other is on its way to Abu Dhabi.
This year Yasalam brings Cut&Paste to the Middle East for the first time, as part of the exciting new events being unveiled on the Abu Dhabi Corniche during Yasalam 2011.
It has been dubbed ‘the dance of the visual arts’ accompanied by DJ music and an MC host, Live Design Battle sees a group of emerging designers flex their skills before a live audience. It requires competitors to rapidly perform as their computer displays are projected onto large screens – competition rounds are fast and furious and last just 15 minutes.
Shatha Al Romaithi, FLASH Entertainment spokesperson, said Cut&Paste had been successful internationally and opened many doors for emerging designers.
“It’s the first time this concept has been tried in the Middle East and we are hoping Abu Dhabi becomes a popular destination for the design tournament.”
The prizes will be a trip for 2 to New York City and a MacBook Pro for the first position.
So the search is now on across the country for eight aspiring designers prepared to go under the microscope and develop a unique design live on stage. The best eight designers selected from the qualifiers will battle it out on stage on November 5, on the Abu Dhabi Corniche. A panel of judges from leading design establishments and the industry will assess each finalist’s creation to determine the champion.
John Fiorelli, Founder of Cut&Paste, said the event was an opportunity to showcase the talent of designers in the Middle East who are often largely unseen.
“We see the products of their work, we see them in magazines, commercials and in movies but we see very little of the people who are behind this great work, and we think that’s a shame,” he said.
“The design process is largely unknown for the average lay man. They don’t know what goes into the process of thinking the design, the sketching and the iterations of the designs. Sometimes I think a lot of people attribute a lot of design merit to instinct and there are moments of inspiration, but it’s actually perspiration that makes design possible.”
