Abu Dhabi Incorporate Intelligent Traffic Systems to Improve Road Safety
(21 September 2011)

DUBAI, UAE, September 21, 2011/PRNewswire/ --Injury crashes in the UAE have been estimated to cost the country about AED 20 billion annually, according to research carried out by the Roadway, Transportation and Traffic Safety Research Centre (RTTSRC). It was also revealed that the UAE sees about 10,000 crashes annually leading to about 2.7 fatalities per day. In addition to safety issues, traffic congestion remains one of the major challenges of road transportation in the UAE, with nearly AED 10.5 billion reportedly wasted annually on congestion.

According to Majed Abed Al-Kathiri, Head of Traffic Services Section, Internal Roads and Infrastructure Directorate at the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, Abu Dhabi Municipality Road Safety Unit and Department of Transport has introduced road safety audits to be conducted on all road infrastructure projects. He went on to say, "The process ensures and addresses safety on UAE roads from the concept design phase to construction and operation of all road transportation projects. The road safety audit process is mandatory, which is not only being followed by developers, consultants and contractors but also being agreed among the different departments i.e. Traffic Police, Transport Authorities and the Urban Planning Council."

In a bid to create a world-class transportation system for the Emirate, Abu Dhabi’s transport authorities are implementing an integrated Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) strategy as part of the 2030 Plan. Effectively coordinating all of the stakeholders involved and establishing a state-of-the-art multi-modal, multi-agency transportation management centre are key focus areas to ensure the number of road crashes are reduced, improve compliance to the speed limit and cut back on the emission of greenhouse gases. The state-of-the-art transportation management centre will incorporate a number of integrated intelligent transportation systems to improve management of road networks in the region. Abu Dhabi Transportation Management Centre (ADTMC) will be built according to best international practices and will provide consolidated and integrated operations facilities.

The new facility will have the ability to accommodate and integrate regional and urban traffic management, public transport operations and safety, traveler information, coordinate incident and emergency management and dispatch/operations personnel from different governmental agencies within the transportation network.

The ITS plan will be reviewed and discussed at the Intelligent Traffic Systems Middle East summit, hosted by Abu Dhabi Police and the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, held between the 21 - 24 November 2011 at Le Royal Meridien. For more information, visit http://www.intelligenttrafficme.com.
