Eco-Friendly Credentials On Display As EMAL Supports International Ozone Day
(15 September 2011)
Fire Department Honoured With Environmental Certificate

Ozone protection is embodied within EMAL’s core value of “Protection of the Environment”. On the occasion of International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (16th September 2011), EMAL re-inforced its commitment for excellence in environmental action and continues to introduce new programmes to educate employees about their environmental responsibilities.

Speaking in support of International Ozone Day EMAL CEO and President, Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, said: “EMAL is committed to the highest environmental standards. We demand them in our operations, we demand them from our contractors and we challenge our employees to find new ways to improve. Protection of the environment is one of our core values and it is at the heart of all that we do.”

As part of the ongoing programme to educate employees a documentary film will be available on the EMAL intranet which will feature general information about the ozone layer, how different type of works can have an impact on the ozone layer; and how employees can change how they work to protect the environment.

Moreover, ‘Green Certificates’ were awarded to EMAL’s Emergency Response Team which uses the latest techniques in fire training technology to reduce its environmental impact. The Bullex training system uses a digital display where lasers are used to extinguish a virtual fire. It provides advanced training without the environmental costs of toxic fumes being released into the ozone and the unnecessary use of water and halons.

EMAL has an impressive record of practices designed to minimise environmental impact. These include: control on emissions which reduces CO2 output by 70 per cent compared to fossil-fuel powered smelters; an environmental monitoring programme to assess air and local conditions; the use of DX Reduction Cell technology which reduces energy use; a waste reduction strategy to maximise recycling; the re-settlement of local wildlife to suitable habitats; and requirements from contractors to use appropriate materials.
