The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has completed the periodic maintenance, rehabilitation and improvement works on Abu Dhabi city’s pedestrian tunnels to enhance their readiness and bring them at par with the highest standards in a process that involved addressing various aspects of security, safety, and public hygiene as well as maintaining the service facilities, and city’s profile.
The Municipality stated that the maintenance campaign, which covered 19 tunnels, witnessed the removal of disfiguring elements such as grafting besides washing, cleaning, rehabilitating, repairing, and maintaining these essential facilities. Works also included repairing lighting fixtures, ventilation means, and electromechanical equipment as well as cleaning and grouting of tiles using special water-tight materials, fixing cracked cement surfaces, replacing damaged tiles, and re-painting and maintaining metal barriers/rails. The process is undertaken in the context of the Municipality’s efforts to raise the efficiency of public facilities, and enhance the standards set for the safety and security of tunnels users.
The Municipality commended the cooperation and collaboration of community members to maintain the urbanized outlook of these metropolitan amenities and uphold the distinctive appearance and modern look of the capital in the public interest and as part of the ongoing efforts to raise the city’s standing among top metropolis worldwide.
It is noteworthy that the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City constructed numerous pedestrian tunnels in the city’s main streets to ensure the safety of road users and the smooth flow of traffic particularly in areas witnessing heavy pedestrian crossing movement.
The Municipality is currently undertaking a series of periodic maintenance works on tunnels and roads network in the capital and suburban areas as part of the ongoing efforts to attain the highest standards of safety for all road users, including drivers and pedestrians, maintain the readiness and efficiency of roads, and ensure smooth flow of traffic. Such measures are part of integrated solutions and comprehensive plans aiming to modernize roads network in the capital and metropolitan areas to make them safe for users and conform to the best international practices and standards under the master development plans envisaged for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
