National Election Committee Launches Awareness Programme For Electoral College Members
(13 July 2011)
Awareness Sessions Will Cover The 129,274 Electoral College Members Across All The Seven Emirates

The National Election Committee (NEC) has launched awareness sessions for the Electoral College members in preparation for the Federal National Council (FNC) elections, scheduled for September 24, 2011. The awareness programme, which will cover all the 129,274 Electoral College members from the seven emirates, is part of NEC’s efforts to impart necessary education on the electoral process to all concerned.

NEC has also announced a time table for the awareness sessions, which will begin on Sunday, 17th of July 2011. The sessions will be open to everyone.

The awareness sessions will include an introduction to the programme to promote political participation, the legal framework of the electoral process for the FNC elections, the evolution of the electoral process since 2006, and the changes in the process brought in this year. The sessions will also explain the rules governing the elections, rights and duties of the voter and the conditions of candidacy, in addition to the timetable for elections.

The Electoral College comprises 47,444 members from Abu Dhabi, 37,514 from Dubai, 16,850 from Ras Al Khaimah, 13,937 from Sharjah, 6,324 from Fujairah, 3,920 from Ajman, and 3,285 from Umm Al Quwain.

"The National Election Committee is keen to continue its communication with the various participants in the electoral process. The Committee has interacted with a wide section of the community through educational lectures and meetings with the election committees. We are now initiating meetings with the Electoral College. All these indicate the progress of the electoral process, which in turns reflects the progress and development witnessed by the UAE," said His Excellency Tariq Hilal Lootah, Undersecretary of the Ministry of State for Federal National Council Affairs, NEC member, and Chairman of the Election Management Committee.

"The meetings with the Electoral College aim to promote awareness on the electoral process and the rights and duties of each member in order to inculcate the right electoral and political culture among the members," added His Excellency.

His Excellency said that due to the significant increase in the number of the Electoral College members and the geographical distance between some emirates, the National Election Committee will organise more than one session in each emirate, in order to make it easier for voters.

His Excellency Saeed Al Ghafli, Assistant Undersecretary for FNC, NEC member and the Committee’s Rapporteur; Dr Mohammad Butti Thani Al Shamsi; Dr Sultan Abdul Hameed Al Jamal, and Dr Ahmed Ali Al Khozeimi, will participate in the awareness sessions.
