In line with its commitment to raise awareness about environmental issues and lead by example, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has distributed an innovative ’Sustainable Lifestyles Tool Kit’ to its employees. The Kit is designed to help employees reduce their own ecological footprint at home and at work.
The Kit contains a unique towel to help employees wash their cars using the barest minimum of water. The towel, which is made of a natural organic material, is durable and can be used again and again. It doesn’t require any chemicals or detergents and only needs to be soaked in water once per use.
The Kit also contains an energy-saving light bulb, a re-usable water bottle, a re-usable shopping bag and a set of wildlife postcards, intended to be sent to friends and family to help raise awareness about the UAE’s unique biodiversity. With over 1 billion plastic bottles being produced in the UAE every year, this re-usable water bottle will help employees reduce waste. The re-usable shopping bag will help employees avoid plastic bags, which are the cause of half of all camel deaths each year.
"It’s important for staff at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi to lead by example. This programme aims to reduce our overall footprint and hopefully inspires others to take action. By adopting simple habits, together we can help make a difference," said Dr. Simon Pearson, Manager of the Environmental Strategy and Policy Coordination Department.
"If everyone in the UAE swapped a conventional light-bulb for an energy-saving one such as the one we distributed to employees, we could save over 1,500 tons of carbon emissions every year. Also, by using the waterless car towel we’ve distributed, our employees will avoid washing their car with a hose, which wastes around 180 litres each time," said Dr. Pearson.
