The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has destroyed more than 5 tons of foodstuffs falling short of specifications ’&’ health standards applicable in the UAE. The action has been taken as part of the Municipality’s endeavours to curb commercial swindling and practicing of unlicensed activities with the aim of containing street hawkers, and protecting the local market from commercial fraud practices.
"The procedures of destroying these foodstuffs were taken in coordination with Abu Dhabi Center for Waste Management at waste burial sites (landfills) at Hameem in a safe and secure manner," said Khalifa Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Director of Public Health, Municipality of Abu Dhabi City.
Foodstuffs destroyed comprise health supplements, cosmetics, personal care items, sexual stimuli, cleaning materials ’&’ detergents, and non-medical herbs.
Meanwhile, the Public Health Division, Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, is cracking down on men & women saloons and beauty parlors as well as cosmetics selling outlets in keeping with its continuous efforts to safeguard the integrity & health of the public. During the campaigns, various types of expired cosmetics weighing more than 5 tons and others unbranded mixes of anonymous origin which lack products labels and expiry dates were found in various shops inside and outside the precincts of Abu Dhabi Island.
"The Municipality will keep up the crackdown on markets, and shops beauty centers as well as men & women’s saloons in order to eliminate these harmful products, enhance compliance with the applicable health stipulations and ensure that all cosmetics conform to the standards in a way that serves the public health, community members and the economy," said Al Rumaithi.
He added that the inspection teams were sometimes obliged to redouble their working hours in order to track down and contain these negative aspects. He called on the public to immediately report any cases of expired or corrupt products offered for sale or in beauty centers through dialing (80022220). He stated the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City made huge progresses in combating illegal practices of some commercial outlets in Abu Dhabi city.
