The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) in Abu Dhabi has announced expansion of its capacity with 40 additional beds. The Center also plans to attract a number of qualified international medical specialists as part of its efforts to expand and improve the treatment, rehabilitation and service infrastructure for patients addicted to drugs.
The announcement came as part of NRC activities to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, being observed as a week-long event across the UAE. Numerous organisations are taking part in the activities, which are aimed at combating drug addiction as well as highlighting its risks to the society. A team of experts from NRC also delivered lectures at various events across the UAE.
NRC’s participation in the activities is integral to its strategy to reduce the demand for drugs in the UAE, addressing the scourge of addiction besides helping raise awareness about its risks. The UAE is committed to reduce the dangers of drugs and provide treatment services and rehabilitation in line with the best scientific and international standards.
The NRC move reinforces its reputation as the role model for various treatments on drug addiction and underlines its responsibility in the society aimed at improving the quality of life. The NRC is working closely with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime [UNODC] and World Health Organization [WHO] to implement the joint Global Programme to reduce demand for drugs, which includes prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and upgrade of relevant policies and guidelines.
Last week, the NRC launched a campaign for its partners and counterparts which aims to enable the joint initiatives, strengthen the bonds of cooperation and exchange experiences between various government and semi-government establishments on several fronts. The NRC also initiated a workshop to assess the current situation and monitor data about the problem of addiction, its economic burden as well as chalking out a national strategy to combat drug addiction in the country.
The NRC campaign aims to shed light on the scourge of drug addiction which has become a danger to the health of the common people, their lives and property, necessitating cooperation and joint initiatives among all stakeholders to reduce the problem and facilitating the treatments for those addicted.
The NRC seeks to implement the best initiatives and global policies in the field of drug addiction, improving the fundamentals of its scientific approach and benefit from international expertise, besides strengthening the capacity of human resources across technical and administrative functions. To this end, NRC is also developing the skill-sets of its human resources through experience-exchange programs with UN organizations, their regional offices as well as the top medical centers across the globe.
