Abu Dhabi To Host Global Chef Challenge And Hans Bueschkens Young Chef Challenge
(26 June 2011)

The Africa & Middle East semi-finals of the WACS Global Chefs Challenge and Hans Bueschkens Young Chefs Challenge will take place in Abu Dhabi on the sidelines of SIAL Middle East 2011 during November 21-23 this year.

The World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS), the Emirates Culinary Guild (ECG) and Turret Media (organiser of SIAL Middle East) made the announcement in a statement. Organised by Emirates Culinary Guild, the competitions will be held at La Cuisine by SIAL, the dedicated chefs’ area at SIAL Middle East.

Alen Thong, Coordinator of the Emirates Culinary Guild, said the dynamic hospitality industry in the capital made Abu Dhabi the perfect choice to host prestigious international events of the culinary industry. “SIAL Middle East and La Cuisine by SIAL provide an ideal environment for professional chefs to network, interact, and exchange information with their peers,” Thong added.

Held annually at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, SIAL Middle East is the region’s dynamic professional business platform for the food, drink & hospitality industry. The event is organised by Turret Media with Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority as Strategic Partner and is part of the world renowned SIAL Group.

Mohamed Jalal Al Reyaysa, Director of Communication & Community Service, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority and the Chairman of the Higher Organizing Committee for SIAL Middle East, commented: “As a regulatory body overseeing the food industry in the emirate, we believe that events such as these play a vital role in raising the standards of culinary excellence. We welcome the dynamism it brings into SIAL Middle East and we stand committed to ensuring that all food products in the emirate meet the highest standards of safety and hygiene."

The WACS Global Chef Challenge is the largest individual culinary competition in the world. The competition not only presents a great opportunity for culinary specialists to put their cooking skills and knowledge to test, but also gives them the chance to win an honour for their country.

“For the first time the Hans Bueschkens Young Chefs Challenge Semi- Finals will be held together with the Global Chefs Challenge. This will motivate young chefs to further refine their expertise and advance in the culinary field as they get exposed to the experience, information and confidence of their seniors,” Thong said.

The national pre-selection process is already in full swing in 93 member countries of WACS. The selected chefs will represent each nation in the continental semi-finals.

Chefs from the Africa & Middle East continent will contest in Abu Dhabi to prepare a three-course meal for eight people to the highest culinary standards. Each course must contain a key ingredient that will be made known to contestants two months prior to the competition. A jury of expert chefs will rate the meals and award points against four criteria: taste, presentation, preparation and hygiene standards.

Winners will then vie for the prestigious gold cup at the finals in South Korea in May 2012. The final event will be held in conjunction with the WACS World Congress, an event that brings together the top industry professionals and press from around the world.
