For the first time in the Arabic gulf region, the Abu Dhabi Corniche has been awarded the internationally recognised Blue Flag certification for beaches and marinas. Based on compliance with 32 strict criteria, including environmental management, information and education, water quality, public safety and services, Blue Flag is only awarded to beaches which meet all of these stringent international standards.
Abu Dhabi is the first Arab capital to join the programme and earn Blue Flag status after scrupulous work had gone into achieving this global recognition for the capital’s beaches. The certification was awarded by the Emirates Wildlife Society – World Wildlife Fund (EWS-WWF) acting as the national coordinator in the UAE for the Blue Flag Programme.
Launched in 1987, the Blue Flag Programme is a voluntary eco-label acknowledged by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and is implemented in more than 3,550 beaches and marinas in around 40 countries worldwide. The Blue Flag is granted for one season at a time and aims to encourage sustainable development at beaches and marinas through the compliance with its rigorous criteria.

Mazroui affirmed that the Blue Flag rating of Abu Dhabi beaches reinforces the Municipality’s vision in guaranteeing the best living standards and highest level of environmental sustainability for its residents.
The certification also makes Abu Dhabi better positioned to adopt international marine environmental protection standards as the Blue Flag is a voluntary programme awarding beaches and marinas certification confirming that quality, safety and other environmental standards are being met.
The awarding of Blue Flag certification for the Abu Dhabi Corniche beach is the culmination of Abu Dhabi Municipality’s on-going efforts to activate and upgrade coastal services through various sports and community programmes. The numerous events held will help to make it a hub for tourists and the local community alike, in keeping with the Municipality’s mission to guarantee the best municipal service standards.
