Delegation From Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) Visit Health Facilities In The United States Of America

Delegation Strengthens Ties And Cooperation And Exchanges Expertise

 

As part of its continuing effort to strengthen bilateral cooperation and exchange expertise with international medical institutions, a delegation from Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), led by SEHA Chairman H.E. Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, has visited United States of America for a weeklong visit to Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio and the healthcare institution Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

The delegation explored technological and procedural advances in healthcare and the latest technologies in the field of medical devices and equipment, while exchanging ideas on best practices in healthcare provision. The visit broadened the avenues of communication between all parties, and improved integration of medical and administrative expertise and the application of best medical practices at SEHA facilities.

The SEHA delegation included H.E. Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, Chairman of SEHA; Basheer Al Muharibi, Deputy Chief of Information Technology Division at SEHA; Mr. Khalifa Al Ketbi, Deputy Chief of Operations Division at SEHA; Rashid Al Qubaisi, Chief Finance Officer, Ambulatory Healthcare Services; Mohamed Hawas, Chief Support Services, Ambulatory Healthcare Services; and Dr. Kamal Hijazi, Senior Advisor, Corporate Affairs at SEHA.

During the visit, delegates reviewed management methods applied at Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic, two of the most notable healthcare institutions in the world. Both organizations have relationships with SEHA in the UAE through international subsidiaries and function as managers of several of SEHA’s flagship facilities in Abu Dhabi. SEHA, which owns and operates all the public healthcare facilities of the emirate of Abu Dhabi has, as a long term goal, a vision of world-class healthcare for its customers and communities served. The visit to the US with its partners is part of a continuing knowledge transfer program to help SEHA achieve its goals though quality management, customer satisfaction, quality outcomes and enhanced patient confidence in the Abu Dhabi’s public health system.

The delegation also exchanged views and experiences on healthcare topics such as work planning, resource and crisis management, strategic planning and frameworks to translate strategic requirements into practical, achievable objectives.

The visit to Johns Hopkins included tours to various centers and departments, including a visit to Johns Hopkins Brain Tumor Center, where the delegation observed the use of the scanner in the surgical operations. The delegation also toured the Center for Breast Cancer reviewing therapeutic services available and radiation treatment services. They also toured the otolaryngology service and saw a demonstration of minimally invasive and robotic surgery. The group then met with Robert Montgomery, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Montgomery was part of the team that performed the world’s first live donor kidney removal using minimally invasive techniques. He led the team that performed the first triple swap kidney transplant and 5-way domino transplant. He is considered one of the world’s leading experts on kidney transplantation. The tour concluded with the delegates visiting the training center, equipped with the latest tools and training methods designed to hone the skills of the next generation of healthcare providers and leaders followed by a tour of the original building of Johns Hopkins Hospital built in 1889.

The delegates’ visit to Cleveland Clinic included a tour of the main hospital building where the delegation attended lectures and workshops about patient and customer experience at the Cleveland Clinic. Delegates enjoyed presentations on building confidence in patients about the health system, opportunities and challenges that patients face in a healthcare encounter, managing patient feedback including complaints and a workshop on how to define the culture for a healthcare institution.

Significant discussions involved new ideas on strengthening the existing partnerships between SEHA and the two USA healthcare institutions. In this context, H.E. Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, said: "SEHA is pursuing a strategy of partnerships with leading international medical institutions to help us develop the healthcare delivery system in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. This approach facilitates knowledge transfer of best practices while adjusting delivery protocols to our local cultural ways. This contributes to the delivery of local health services that match or exceed international standards while being sensitive to our customs and traditions."

SEHA owns and operates 12 hospitals, 62 clinics and 2 blood banks in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Johns Hopkins Medicine International manages SEHA’s flagship hospital in Al Ain, Tawam Hospital as well as the specialty maternity hospital, Corniche Hospital on Abu Dhabi Island. JHMI also manages the general hospital, Al Rahba Hospital just outside of Shahama. Cleveland Clinic manages the huge complex Sheikh Khalifa Medical City which includes the acute care hospital, a rehabilitation unit and a behavioral medicine hospital along with 8 family medicine clinics, 14 specialty outpatient clinics and the Abu Dhabi Blood bank.
