The Yas Drag Racing School is offering the chance to drive a Chevrolet Camaro SS on the world-class drag strip during June. The School has six 426-bhp Camaros on its fleet to help train up-and-coming drag racers, and now anyone with a driving licence can book six runs in the iconic American muscle cars.
Drivers will receive a safety briefing before taking a training run down the strip with a qualified drag racing instructor at the wheel. Instructor and pupil then swap places for one more run. If the instructor is satisfied with the driver’s technique and ability, the pupil then gets six solo runs in the car.
“We wanted to give as many people as possible the chance to experience a true American muscle car on the drag strip,” said Rashed Al Qubaisi, Head of the Yas Drag Racing Centre. “Some people are reluctant to take their own street cars to the strip in case they damage the clutch or the tyres. Our new Yas Camaro Drag Race Experience allows them to enjoy the thrills of drag racing in a safe and controlled environment without risking the wear and tear.”
The sessions cost AED 600 and take place at 5.30, 6.30 and 7.30 pm on 2, 9, 15 and 16 June. They will resume in October after the summer break. All slots must be pre-booked by calling 800 YAS (927).
Rod Fuller, Chief Instructor at the Yas Drag Racing School, says he hopes the experience will encourage more people to take up the sport. “My first serious drag racer was a Camaro and it got me hooked on drag racing,” he said. “I’m willing to bet some of our customers will come back with their own cars on our Open Drag Racing nights and will start to compete. Even if they don’t, the Camaro Experience is a great way to spend an evening.
These cars pump out some serious power and torque.”
