Khalifa University To Organize Mobile Application Competition 2011

Khalifa University will host its sixth annual Mobile Application Contest (MAC) in Abu Dhabi. Students from all over the UAE and the region will participate in this year’s competition. During the event there will also be an exhibition featuring a number of innovative projects in the Mobile Phone Applications Field.

The Computer Engineering Department at Khalifa University is organizing the Mobile Application Contest 2011 (MAC 2011). The event will be sponsored by the Khalifa Fund, as well as the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, Nokia, Emirates Advanced Investments, and RIM.

Khalifa University in cooperation with Nokia organized training programs for free to this year’s participants which will be based on Android and Nokia’s Qt Development Kit.

Commenting on the upcoming competition Khalifa University Executive Vice President, Dr. Arif Sultan Al Hammadi stated: “The mobile application competition which is organised by Khalifa University, now in its sixth consecutive year offers an opportunity to unveil new innovative applications which are created by students in the UAE. Over the past few years we have witnessed the development of practical, creative applications which have been adopted by institutions as well as being marketed commercially."

He added: "The high standard of previous years’ competitors reflects the significant progress made by UAE universities’ students, which in turn reveals the evolution of higher education in the UAE. We at Khalifa University are delighted to support this competition once again. MAC offers participating students a nurturing environment where they get to expand their creativity and scientific knowledge. Through this competition, students gain access to the latest scientific innovations and the basic skills required for their future scientific careers.”

Dr. Ahmed Khalil Al-Mutawwa CEO of Khalifa Fund added, “ Thanks to the sponsorship by the Khalifa Fund, this year’s contest offered to participating students an online CISCO entrepreneurship course titled “How to start a business”. The Fund will continue to support all activities that develop and promote entrepreneurial spirit and cultural innovation in different sectors of society.”

Al-Mutawwa added: “Initiatives like Mac 2011, which is being lead by Khalifa University aims to motivate youth and encourage their creativity and hard work to formulate and develop creative ideas which will positively reflect on the performance of the economy of the United Arab Emirates.”

The presentation and awards ceremony will be held on Monday 21st of May 2011 and will also include top of the range Mobile Phones that will be distributed to the top 4 winning teams. In line with Khalifa University vision to lead innovation with the future Arab generations, one or more of the winners of the contest will be nominated to participate in the University Mobile Challenge competition and the world mobile summit next year.
