ALHOSN University Hosts Akoun Workshop To Empower UAE’s Youths To Start Own Business
(1 May 2011)
Abu Dhabi Council For Economic Development Challenges ALHOSN Students To Win Top Prizes At 2011 Akoun Awards

ALHOSN University, a leading Abu Dhabi-based institution dedicated to high-quality and value-based education, recently hosted a workshop under the Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development’s (ADCED) Akoun entrepreneurship campaign to train youths in the UAE on how to set up their own businesses.

Participating ALHOSN students were given ideas on how to start and manage their own small business and overcome entrepreneurship’s various challenges. They were also given background information on the Akoun program initiated by ADCED in partnership with the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development, the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Western Region Development Council and Twofour54.

Among the event’s attendees were entrepreneur Omar Busaidy; Khalifa Fund’s Hesam Morsy; Twofour54°’s Afra Al Marar; ADCED’s Anoud Al Alawi, Afra Al Mehairi, Jennifer Green, Ali Al Saloom; and ALHOSN University Business Administration Department members Prof. Ahmad Zohdi, Dr. Husam Malkawi, Dr. Somkiat Mansumitrchai, and Dr. Candy Chiu.

“This country’s youths definitely have the potential and the enthusiasm to become successful entrepreneurs. What they need is more motivation and knowledge. Initiatives such as Akoun are vital to promoting the entrepreneurial spirit of UAE youths and complement ALHOSN’s own commitment to providing ‘global knowledge with local vision.’ Our students are looking forward to Akoun ’s entrepreneurship competition this year to prove that the younger generation can excel in business as well,” said Prof. Ahmad Zohdi, Dean of the Faculty of Business, ALHOSN University.

ADCED holds Akoun workshops in university campuses across Abu Dhabi catering to both Emirati and expatriate students. ALHOSN was chosen for its diverse student population and its growing reputation as a centre for academic excellence. ALHOSN students were encouraged to join the 2011 edition of Akoun Bright Ideas Bright Futures Awards, an annual competition where students submit creative business proposals that could lead to the creation of a successful business. A total of AED 100,000 worth of prizes is at stake at this year’s awards.

The Akoun program was launched in 2009 to support the goals of Abu Dhabi’s Economic Vision 2030 by expanding the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector and opening up opportunities for entrepreneurial growth. It is overseen by ADCED, an economic policy advisory council that facilitates local economic diversification and growth by fostering closer ties between the public and private sectors..
