Sir Bob Geldof, who has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on seven occasions, was today awarded the Al Saqar Trophy in Abu Dhabi by His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, U.A.E. Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor Higher Colleges of Technology.
The highly regarded international activist and artist, Sir Bob, 56, was presented this award by H.E. Sheikh Nahayan in recognition of his outstanding impact and leadership in mobilizing the world and its political leaders to take action to combat some of the most pressing humanitarian issues facing developing nations over the last three decades.
“I am deeply honored that His Highness has considered me for the highly prestigious Al Saqar Trophy,” said Sir Bob. “I am grateful for this opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi and meet His Highness, and witness the great work he is doing in advancing the priority of education across the Middle East.”
The Al Saqar Trophy was presented to the Irish humanitarian activist today at The Gulf Intelligence Food Security Forum hosted at the Higher Colleges of Technology, which is the largest university in the U.A.E. The trophy, which embodies the culture and history of the country, was designed by an Emirati Student with desert sand from the country’s seven Emirates - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quain, Ras al Khaimah and Ajman.
Mr. Geldof, who is a member of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Advocacy Group of eminent personalities, joins a distinguished list of previous recipients of the Al Saqar Trophy who include Dr. AJ Kalam, the Former President of India, King Gustaf of Sweden and Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister of the U.K.
