The Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) organized a clean-up drive on Samaliyah Island, marking the Earth Day 2011 which was observed worldwide on Friday, April 22.
More than 200 ADMA-OPCO employees and family members braved high temperatures to help clean this important protected marine and coastal sanctuary that stretches over 13.3 square kilometers.
The clean up, organized in coordination with the Emirates Heritage Club to which the island belongs, covered both the long sandy beaches and deep seabed of the island. While around 200 participants divided into four groups collected garbage along the beaches, six ADMA divers along with volunteers picked up debris from the island’s jetty and port areas.
Situated 12km north-east of Abu Dhabi city, Samaliyah Island boasts rich and diverse ecology with bountiful mangrove forests teeming with wildlife. ADMA-OPCO’s initiative to clean up the island was in line with the company’s commitment to environment protection and marine life conservation.
It was also part of ADMA-OPCO’s contribution to this year’s Earth Day, held under the theme “A Billion Acts of Green.”
