Abu Dhabi Earth Hour 2011 Video Captures Electric Spirit Of People
(24 April 2011)
Video Release Marks Celebration Of Earth Day

As the lights of the Abu Dhabi’s prominent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Sheikh Zayed Bridge were plunged into darkness for Earth Hour, video teams stood ready to capture the event and others like it throughout the city. In celebration of Earth Day, a 3-minute high definition video released today by the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) and twofour54, Abu Dhabi’s regional centre of excellence for Arabic content creation in the media and entertainment industry, reveals a government together with its people and businesses taking action for the planet.

Landmarks such as Yas Hotel, ALDAR’s HQ, Emirates Palace, and Masdar Institute all went dark during the global switch-off event and are featured in the video. “The movie artfully captures a community dedicated to going beyond the hour and committing to sustained action on behalf of the planet”, remarked Tamara Withers, Corporate Sustainability Officer of EWS-WWF.

The video records residents of Abu Dhabi city gathered at the Municipality’s Corniche beaches to celebrate Earth Hour and participating in a lantern walk, drumming up support with Abu Dhabi Festival’s Dubai Drums, and enjoying the sounds of the Abu Dhabi Choral Group all of which were organized in partnership with Municipality of Abu Dhabi City. The video footage, recorded and edited by twofour54, is being released today.

“twofour54 was proud to support the Emirates Wildlife Society in Association with WWF in recording Abu Dhabi’s participation of Earth Hour 2011. Our input was to provide the necessary resources - talent, equipment and infrastructure - which enabled us to capture the unique spirit of Abu Dhabi during what is now a world-wide call to action”, said Wayne Borg, Deputy CEO and Chief Operating Officer at twofour54.

The ‘Go Beyond the Hour’ theme of Earth Hour 2011 challenges everyone to do more for the planet than switch off lights for one hour. Individuals and organizations were encouraged to commit to sustained action for the health of the planet. As a result of this year’s Earth Hour efforts in the UAE, more than 400 companies signed up and tens of thousands of individuals participated by attending public events across the emirates, spreading the message through social media platforms, or signing up to go beyond the hour.

Extending Earth Hour beyond the hour means making a commitment to take action to protect the planet from climate change by replacing old incandescent light bulbs with more efficient compact florescent bulbs, turning the air conditioning from 22 degrees to 24 degrees, or bicycle commuting to work. “twofour54 has done their part to go beyond the hour by producing this awareness-raising video. We want it to help motivate and remind people of their commitments to the environment”, EWS-WWF’s Tamara Withers remarked.

EWS-WWF also asks individuals, governments, schools and companies to ‘Go Beyond the Hour’ by committing to enduring actions, big or small, that they will sustain for the future of our planet.
