Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) held the Grand Opening of its Taweelah based smelter today, having reached full production on the last working day of 2010. The glistening event was held on site at the smelter, and attended by senior EMAL representatives, VIPs, and honoured guests.
Addressing the guests at the event, Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, President and CEO of EMAL said: “Through dedication and with inspiration from our past and His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE’s vision, EMAL has become a reality today, a national landmark, and a global competitor.”
EMAL was created by a 50:50 joint venture partnership between DUBAL and Mubadala Development Company, providing exceptional financial strength and industry knowledge. This partnership has allowed the smelter to capitalise on the best technologies and technical skill sets available in the industry.
Al Mazrooei added: “EMAL is the combination of the best knowledge and resources in the UAE, and has been built by means of energy efficient, Emirati developed, Dubal DX technology. As the UAE’s largest industrial mega-project outside of oil and gas, EMAL is leading the way in diversification. We are growing the economy to benefit those who live, work and invest in the Emirates, and represent a vivid embodiment of what the future of our country is about.”
The creation of EMAL has further reinforced the position of the UAE as a leading player in the global aluminium industry. EMAL and its partners are also pursuing a portfolio of overseas investments in the aluminium value chain.
EMAL has created 2,000 permanent skilled jobs with 14 per cent Emiratisation. EMAL’s commitment to future development is shown in its investment in scholarships and training programs to provide technical instruction for local graduates, and guaranteed job opportunities for graduates.
In his address to the event, Al Mazrooei also emphasised the many accomplishments EMAL had made towards protecting the environment and benefitting the community. These include employing world class sustainable technology to reduce emissions in line with Environment Agency Abu Dhabi requirements to minimise carbon footprint and to ensure conservation of local species and habitat.
EMAL’s commitment to enriching local communities can be seen in its support for local charities and sports groups. EMAL conducts regular consultation with the local community to ensure it is an active partner.
Guests attending the event were given the opportunity to learn about the aluminium smelter in the interactive educational zones located in the EMAL pre-function area. Innovative features included touch-screens with 3-D models and animations of the smelter and the smelting process.
EMAL employees were on hand to answer guests’ questions throughout the zones, which highlighted the ambitious company’s priorities – health, safety and environment; achievements to date; and the positive role in Emirati society EMAL is playing through its continuing Emiratisation initiatives. Particular emphasis was placed on the founding fathers that provided the vision for EMAL.
With EMAL on track to produce 750,000 tonnes of aluminium in 2011, Al Mazrooei closed the event by thanking guests for their attendance, and with the message to customers that, now in full production, “EMAL is producing reliable, high quality aluminium for customers around the globe from one of the world’s largest, most sustainable and technologically advanced smelters.”
