Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA) and Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. KGAA through their wholly owned operational entity Fresenius Medical Care Renal Services (UAE) Limited (Fresenius Medical Care) today announced the signing of a Management Services Agreement (MSA) appointing Fresenius Medical Care as SEHA’s partner to improve the provision of renal dialysis services offered by SEHA within the SEHA HealthSystem.
SEHA is owner and operator of all the public hospital and clinics of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Its integrated network includes 12 hospitals and 62 ambulatory, family and primary care clinics and two blood banks. The network includes the dialysis units at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Tawam, Mafraq, Al Rahba, Liwa and Madinat Zayed Hospitals. SEHA is currently in the process of building another larger dialysis facility near Mafraq Hospital that will provide care for up to 264 more patients.
Fresenius Medical Care is the world’s leading provider of products and services for patients with chronic kidney failure. With a network of 2,757 dialysis clinics in North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Africa, Fresenius Medical Care treated 214,648 dialysis patients around the world as at December 31, 2010.
The signing of the MSA culminates several months of discussions between SEHA and Fresenius Medical Care which were based on the proposed partnership agreement announced in an MOU in early September 2010. The effective date of the agreement is the 27th of March 2011.
“We are very pleased to have this MSA in place,” said H.E. Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA). Our vision is to provide our customers and communities with world-class healthcare in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. We wished to engage a competent manager to provide dialysis services in Abu Dhabi so that SEHA may achieve world class healthcare status and results comparable to those obtained by the manager in its own healthcare facilities. We believe we have such a partner in Fresenius Medical Care.”
“This agreement enables Fresenius Medical Care to expand its presence in a key Middle Eastern market,” said Dr. Emanuele Gatti, the company’s global chief strategist and CEO for Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. “As a vertically integrated dialysis company, we are the right partner for successful, long-term cooperation to improve the quality of dialysis patients’ lives in Abu Dhabi. At the same time, the contract is an excellent basis for further growth of our company in this region.”
Carl Stanifer, CEO of SEHA explained, “Fresenius Medical Care and its affiliates are members of a well-established and reputable healthcare organisation currently providing dialysis care to patients on the basis of world-class quality and safety standards. They provide efficient and financially responsible management of their own owned healthcare facilities which they will exercise in the MSA with SEHA. We are very excited that they will be bringing in their management systems to not only improve delivery of services to our patients, but through the knowledge transfer program, educate our SEHA staff on advanced techniques and management principles in delivering world-class services in a financially responsible way.”
The MSA, which is designed to operate over a period of ten years, is governed by a number of clinical and non-clinical performance indicators. Fresenius Medical Care will provide all management staff, while caregivers will remain SEHA employees; so, from the patient’s perspective, the changeover will be seamless.
Dr. Ali Al Obaidli, Chief, Clinical Affairs for SEHA added, “This MSA will provide the latest clinical pathways to treat patients utilized in Fresenius Medical Care’s vast network of clinics in Europe and other international locations around the world. Local physicians and staff will have access to Fresenius Medical Care’s training and treatment methodologies and this will translate into a better service to the patient.“
The MSA is expected to lead to a significant contribution in research towards preventive programs for those suffering from end stage renal failure.
