Under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan – Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region and the President of UAE Red Crescent Authority, UAE RC in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is hosting the 7th MENA Conference at Crown Plaza – Yas Island.

The 7th MENA Conference started on the 24th and will continue until 26 March 2011. The MENA National Societies together with other components of the Movement – ICRC, IFRC and sister National Societies will discuss how to strengthen the coordination of the response of the Movement in Libya and neighbouring countries, and to work together in having an improved coherent and united Movement action and position at local, regional and international level.

Dr. AbdelKarim Binsiali, MENA Zone Director of the Federation Secretariat indicated that this is an important meeting for all MENA National Societies and IFRC Secretariat to explore the various ways to address the humanitarian situation in Libya and the affected neighbouring countries. “The Conference will discuss important issues that transcend national and regional boundaries and carries implications within the wider global context especially within the International RC/RC Movement”, the Director observed.

Mr. Tadateru Konoé, President of IFRC sent a message to all the participants to praise all the work done by the National Societies in the region as the situation in the region is constantly changing and becoming highly unpredictable. The President also appreciated the volunteers in Libya, Tunisia and Egypt for their outstanding service which bring so much comfort, support and hope to the displaced people, and have also provided a service to other actors in the region.

UAE RC, who are hosting this important Conference, played a great role in responding to the North Africa situation and supporting the IFRC operation on the Tunisian Libyan border, by building a transit camp that has the capacity to host up to 7000 people.

Libya Red Crescent leaders will present to the participants an update about the humanitarian situation inside Libya as well as the implications and needs created by the changing context. The participants will also discuss with Tunisian RC and Egyptian RC leaders the spill over effect on Tunisia and Egyptian borders and the needs of the migrants.
