Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, today opened the 2011 edition of the Annual International Pediatric Conference. The conference, which will run until 26th April, is being held at the Danat Al Ain Resort (formerly the Intercontinental Hotel) in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. Prominent speakers from Johns Hopkins Medicine USA, Europe, and the Middle East, along with a number of specialists from several national hospitals, including Tawam, and the UAE University, are attending, including Dr. Ned Lawson, guest speaker from John Hopkins Hospital who will present the ‘Golden Hour of Newborn Life’.
The conference is hosted by the Department of Pediatrics at Tawam Hospital, which provides tertiary care to patients from newborn to 15 years of age. This year, in its fifth annual edition, the conferencehas attracted more than 400 participants, and has increased the interactive elements of the event to includemore discussions and workshops on the latest advances in general and sub-specialty pediatric issues; including management of the most common illnesses seen by general pediatricians and practical ways to approach them: such as urinary tract infection, febrile illnesses, sleep disturbances and elevated blood pressure, to the most state-of-the-art innovative therapies such as cardiac and minimally invasive surgeries. The event provides the region’s pediatric professionals with the opportunity to share their respective knowledge and research findings.
Dr. Aiman Rahmani, Chairman of Tawam’s Pediatric Department, commented, “The interactive element to this year’s conference means that Abu Dhabi’s own local experts will be able to share experiences with some of the most prominent pediatricians in the field, which will enrich the practice of pediatrics in the region. The fact that this year’s conference focuses on evidencebased pediatrics promises that the event will be of a highly scientific and practical value for all participants”.
Due to the popularity of the conference, which has double the attendance of last year’s event, the number of workshops offered at the 2011 event has increased from six to eight due to very positive feedback from previous conferences. Workshops will offer hands-on experience to participants on common problems in pediatrics such as feeding problems, electrolytes imbalance and approach to febrile illnesses, in addition to a systematic approach for management of metabolic emergencies and others.
Scheduled workshops include, the interpretation of pediatric ECG, epilepsy and EEG, asthma management devices, metabolic emergencies, and neonatal ventilation.
Gregory F. Schaffer, CEO Tawam Hospital, commented: “The annual pediatric conferences are one of our proudest achievements at Tawam Hospital, andhave grown to become one of the region’s largest and most important events in the field of pediatrics. Pediatric care remains a top priority at Tawam and the Fifth Annual International Pediatric Conference is indicative of our commitment to the development in the field of pediatric care at the hospital, throughout the UAE and across the wider region”.
As well as annual pediatric conferences, recent introductions to the Pediatric Department include investment in equipment such as Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA) technology in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a state of the art respiratory technology for premature babies, which has been made available in the UAE for the first time at Tawam Hospital. New services, such as continual renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and expansion to accommodate a higher number of admissions and referrals were also introduced in 2010.
As part of a continuous quality improvement program, the department’s staff recently finalized work on developing 59 Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPL) and some 56 educational materials in English and Arabic for patients and their families.
One of the largest in the UAE, Tawam’s Pediatric Department provides world-class inpatient care with 128 pediatric hospital beds, including 36 in Pediatric Medical, 18 in Pediatric Oncology, 19 in Pediatric Surgery and 41 in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), as well as six Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) beds and eight in the Pediatric Extended Unit (PECU). Additionally, the Pediatric Department provides exceptional outpatient services, both on-site and via satellite facilities at Al Neima Clinic and Al Wagan Hospital.
Tawam Hospital is part of the SEHA HealthSystem and is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Helath Services Company (SEHA), which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
