In partnership with The Big Bang Education CIC, an initiative of Engineering UK, the Abu Dhabi Festival 2011 education programme will present a series of fantastic performances fusing comedy, performance and sciences for young audiences from schools across Abu Dhabi. Held under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the Abu Dhabi Festival celebrates the transformative powers of art and music in supporting the educational development of children and young adults with events across the emirates.

Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival, Her Excellency Mrs. Hoda I Al Khamis Kanoo, said: “The vision for the future of Abu Dhabi is a place where knowledge, creativity and innovation in all its forms are celebrated and prized. It will be a hub for cultural appreciation, technology and the sciences. The Abu Dhabi Festival remains truly committed to both supporting the development of this vision and also nurturing the young minds who will lead the drive towards its realisation. We are thrilled to welcome the Big Bang Education CIC to participate in the Festival this year. Through our collaboration we will inspire and engage a new generation to pursue studies in the arts, sciences, technology and engineering.”

Bringing the sciences alive for students at all stages of their intellectual development, the Big Bang Education CIC, will present two productions a day over five days between 27th and 31st March at the Abu Dhabi Theatre. The Big Bang Punk Science Climate Change performance is aimed at 14 to 16-year olds, whilst The Big Bang Feel the Force performance targets the younger 9 to 14-year old age group. Taking the intimidating edge off of sciences, both shows are jam-packed, bringing theoretical physics and mathematics to life in a fun-filled interactive format.

Taking this fantastic combination of performance and sciences into classrooms across Abu Dhabi, the Big Bang’s Carbon Trading Challenge workshop will reach out to students in the 11 to 19 age range. This high impact, real-life mathematics road-show features learning in a simulated oil trading environment. Reacting to market news, analysing data and managing budgets, the students will apply their mathematics and enterprise skills to generate a profit in the virtual world. As well as learning to work effectively in a team, this workshop promotes making the most of our precious non-renewable resources, in this case oil.

Promoting the lasting legacy of the Abu Dhabi Festival and ensuring that these unique learning tools can be used to inspire other students, the programme aims to inspire mathematics and sciences teachers with fun and interactive classroom activities that can be a source of future information for future use in their lessons.

The Abu Dhabi Festival education programme is packed with workshops, classroom activities, lectures, performances and concerts aimed at bringing the arts to schools, colleges and social groups across the UAE. The programme runs beyond the Festival itself, forming a key component of ADMAF’s year-round calendar of education-driven activities that provide intellectual nourishment for children and adults across the country.
